From mid-November thru Early April the Coastal Bend plays host to over 400 migratory birds to include the Endangered Whooping Cranes who call the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge their winter home.  They feast on blue crabs all along the flats and marshes of Blackjack Peninsula and are very easy to see by boat - in fact better than if on land.  Do bring your high-powered binoculars and camera lenses to get up-close and personal with all the birds spotted on your tour.

It is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy all the spectacular natural wonders that this area of the Coastal Bend has to offer.  The Texas Parks and Wildlife department has developed and maintains the trails in an area called North Harbor Island, just west of Port Aransas. The Lighthouse Lakes Paddling Trail is actually a series of four loops ranging in length from 1.25 miles to 6.8 miles. The trails meander through an extensive black mangrove estuary, into sloughs and back lakes near the historic 1857 Lydia Ann Lighthouse on North Harbor Island. Paddlers can paddle through mangroves and seagrass flats that provide outstanding bird watching and fishing.
